Opened in November 2010 as part of the £2 million Three Waves project,
The Resting Wave is a a sculptured retaining wall providing sheltered
spaces along the Esplanade with seating, in the form of a series of
weathered oak seats, some with memorial plaque's, along a stretch of
the Esplanade between the new Water Sports Centre and Newbridge and
the pedestrian subway tunnel under the busy A20 dual carriageway,
linking the seafront area with the town centre.
Designed by architect Tonkin Liu the project is in the form of 3
waves. Beside the Resting Wave is the Lighting Wave. A line of tall,
white columns with lighting that can be controlled to create a wave
movement along the length of the Esplanade. The 3rd Wave is the
Lifting Wave, a pedestrian walkway running along the beach made up
from a series of pre formed sculptured ramps and stairs.
