A self-guided walking tour is available for a small fee when visiting the Santa Barbara Mission. Just as one enters the Old Mission Cemetery area, the plaque on a rock can be found. The plaque reads:


Don Jose Francisco de Ortega
1734 - 1798

Chief Scout for Gaspar de Portola.
Ortega assisted with the founding of
Mission San Buena Ventura and established
The Presidio at Santa Barbara where he
served as Commandant from 1781 - 1784.
Husband of Dona Maria Carrillo.
