The sculpture rests upon a brick plinth at the edge of the village's rugby pitch. It was created as part of an international sculpting event at the 2005 Caerleon Sculpture Symposium. Inscribed on part of the sculpture are the words "In Vino Veritas" which is a Latin phrase that translates to "In wine [there is the] truth."
"On the rugby theme, Gerard Ducret from France sculptured, “Three Romans and a Celt” which is now sited at the local rugby field in Caerleon. Officially it represents the Roman victory over the local Silures but can also be interpreted as a rugby scrum with the Welshman sitting on a sheep!" -- Source: Newport City Council
