The time capsule is inscribed simply "1924". It was originally placed by former Maine Governor Baxter when the unfinished memorial was first dedicated on November 11, 1924. The memorial was dedicated a second time when it was completed on May 31, 1926. Over the years the time capsule was forgotten and the memorial suffered from neglect and deterioration. In 1999 a major restoration projected was undertaken and in the process the time capsule was rediscovered. The capsule was opened and the contents examined. During a re-dedication ceremony on May 30, 2001 the time capsule was put back in place with the original 1924 contents along with documentation about the restoration project and a letter to the future people of Maine from Governor Angus King.
