In November 2010, The Esplanade along Dover's
seafront was given a huge makeover with the Three Waves Project. This
coin operated 'talking telescope', one of two along this part of The
Esplanade, is sited at the Eastern end of project, approximately 250m from the one sited West.
Designed by architect Tonkin Liu the project is in
the form of 3 waves. The Lifting Wave walkway is a made up from a
series of pre formed sculptured ramps and stairs that rise and fall
along the Esplanade between the new Water Sports Centre and a tunnel
under the busy A20 dual carriageway, linking the seafront area
with the town centre. Beside the Lifting Wave walkway is the Resting
Wave, a sculptured retaining wall providing sheltered spaces along the
Esplanade with seating. The 3rd Wave is Lighting Wave. A line of tall,
white columns with lighting that can be controlled to create a wave
movement along the length of the Esplanade.
