Opened in November 2010 as part of the £2 million
Three Waves project, The Lifting Wave walkway is a made up from a
series of pre formed sculptured ramps and stairs that rise and fall
along the Esplanade between the new Water Sports Centre and a tunnel
under the busy A20 dual carriageway, linking the seafront area
with the town centre.
Designed by architect Tonkin Liu the project is in
the form of 3 waves. Beside the Lifting Wave walkway is the Resting
Wave, a sculptured retaining wall providing sheltered spaces along the
Esplanade with seating. The 3rd Wave is Lighting Wave. A line of tall,
white columns with lighting that can be controlled to create a wave
movement along the length of the Esplanade.
