Mr Hatfield runs the local confectionery. He dotes on his cat, and so do his customers. James is a customer of Mr Hatfield, having got a persistent cough that requires some cough sweets. The cat falls ill and James diagnoses a fur ball. An operation removes the fur ball and the cat recovers, much to Mr Hatfield’s relief and that of Mrs Pumphrey and Mrs Tibbett, who take an interest in Mr Hatfield’s welfare.
