This is one of many bridges that carries trains into Fenchurch Street railway station from the east of the City and DLR trains into Tower Gateway station.

The
main photo was taken from a footpath that is about 30m to the south of the bridge.
Footpaths pass under the bridge on both sides of the road so
there are opportunities for photos from many different angles.
Much of this railway track used to be elevated with a
continuous string of arches supporting the tracks. In many locations, such as
this one for example, the arches were not suitable for vehicular traffic passing
below them due to limited height at the sides of the arches. Many of the arch
bridges that crossed roads have been replaced, over the years, with girder
bridges that give a consistent height across the road.
This bridge has
a two lane road passing beneath it in a north/south direction. A clearance height is shown
with a clearance of 15 ft 06 in.
As well as the
mainline trains, that use Fenchurch Street, this bridge also carries DLR trains
to/from Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station. These trains are
driverless. To the east of this bridge the railway starts to split with the mainline trains taking a more northerly route and the
DLR trains keeping to the south. By the time the tracks
reach Limehouse station the split is complete.
There is always a
risk of a bridge being struck by a road vehicle and there are normally signs
advising who to contact should a bridge hit be observed. The sign, at this bridge,
reads:
"This bridge is WERB 0527
Stepney Causeway,
between
Shadwell &
Limehouse
In the event of any
vehicle striking this
bridge please phone
Docklands Light
Railway
on 0207 538 3440
as quickly as
possible.
The safety of trains may be affected."
