Beaches are rare on the North Shore of Lake Superior, and this one is even more unique in that it is "pink."
Named after Iona Lind, who once owned a resort on the site, this beach is pebble and cobble pink rhyolite and felsite bedrock. The beach is bound on the south end by a large basalt outcrop. On the north end is a rhyolite and felsite cliff that is about 30 feet high. This cliff is what spawned the beach's pinkish colored rocks.
Due to its rock makeup, the beach sometimes tinkles like glass as the water and waves come over the rocks which has resulted in some people saying that the beach sings.
Swimming is allowed but beware, Lake Superior is cold with water temperatures nearly always in the 30-40 degree range.
Iona's Beach is also a Scientific and Natural Area with restrictions on the use, such as no pets, horses etc.
Nearby are walking trails, safe harbor, parking lots and even a horizontal pine tree stretching its limbs towards the lake.
