Since 1973, all incorporated towns were declared officially to be ‘cities’ by an act of the Minnesota Legislature. Ever wonder about those ‘little cities’? This series of 100 waymarks will take you to all corners of the great state of Minnesota to visit the 100 smallest of the incorporated cities in the state. All have a great story to tell.
This is the 88th of 100 of the cities described in the book LITTLE MINNESOTA. Turtle River is named for its Turtle River Lake and for the river so named flowing through this lake, the most northern tributary of the Mississippi. A boom lumber village in the township began on land on Turtle River Lake purchased in 1899 by Fred DeSilver, who built a hotel and several stores. When the 1901 survey for the Minnesota and International Railway extension passed through the present site, merchants and residents removed their buildings to the 1898 homestead claim of Simon E. Bright. By 1910, two large fires had destroyed most buildings on the main street.
The township boat access, located at coordinates N47 35 370 W094 45 021, offers a chance to wind through the residential area of this part of Little Minnesota to gain a glimpse of the beautiful Turtle River Lake. The abandoned railroad grade is now the Blue Ox Trail, a snowmobile and an unpaved non-motorized recreational trail between Lake Bemidji State Park & International Falls. Turtle River was incorporated in 1901 and is currently the home to 77 persons.
This series of waymarks is tuned to getting people to visit these wonderful small communities before they disappear completely. To validate your ‘find’, please post a photo of you with your GPS at the coordinates and please relate a little tidbit about what you learned about the town and its people that is not in this narrative or the book.
