One of the explanations I give when asked about
waymarking is that we have the opportunity to record objects, such as
this simple memorial bench, for a time when sadly it may disappear and
no record of it survives elsewhere. This memorial bench sits forlorn
outside the Bull Inn, in the High Street at Eastry. The Bull itself is
no more, and is up for sale, perhaps to be converted, but it's fate is
interlinked with the memorial bench. Mr Alliot, was a French
Chef who worked at the pub, and had lived in a caravan at a property
behind St Mary's Church until his death.
A Memorial Plaque on the bench reads;
In Loving Memory of Michel Alliot : (MUSH) /
4/7/46 - 14/2/05 / Donated by HIS FRIENDS AT The Bull Inn.
Beneath is another plaque which reads;
LE CHEF! / a toujours / raison
Who will now care for the bench?, will it be saved
? Here is a record of it's existence just in case.
