Since 1973, all incorporated towns were declared officially to be ‘cities’ by an act of the Minnesota Legislature. Ever wonder about those ‘little cities’? This series of 100 waymarks will take you to all corners of the great state of Minnesota to visit the 100 smallest of the incorporated cities in the state. All have a great story to tell.
This is the 41st of 100 of the cities described in the book LITTLE MINNESOTA. Iron Junction is a city in west central St. Lois County. Incorporated in 1893, Iron Junction is currently the home to 86 persons. During WWII, all of the iron ore needed for combat materials went through Iron Junction on the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad [DM&IR]. Today, twenty Canadian National Railroad trains hauling ore still pass through Iron Junction daily.
During 1890, the DM&IR laid track & erected a two stall roundhouse & depot in Iron Junction to service the trains connecting the port of Duluth with the mines in Mountain Iron & Biwabik. Over the next seven decades, millions of tons of ‘red dust’ were mined and passed through the strategic intersection. If not for an opportunity lost when an offer by the DM&IR for land was rejected, Iron Junction may have grown exponentially. The entire project to construct a rail yard & headquarters was moved to Proctor.
This series of waymarks is tuned to getting people to visit these wonderful small communities before they disappear completely. To validate your ‘find’, please post a photo of you with your GPS at the coordinates and please relate a little tidbit about what you learned about the town and its people that is not in this narrative or the book.
