Since 1973, all incorporated towns were declared officially to be ‘cities’ by an act of the Minnesota Legislature. Ever wonder about those ‘little cities’? This series of 100 waymarks will take you to all corners of the great state of Minnesota to visit the 100 smallest of the incorporated cities in the state. All have a great story to tell.
This is the 36th of 100 of the cities described in the book LITTLE MINNESOTA. Henriette is a city in southwestern Pine County that was formerly called Cornell and whose name was changed in 1913 to avoid confusion with another Minnesota town of the same name. The city was established as the timber was cleared during the lumbering booms of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Eastern Minnesota Railroad established a depot in the area in 1898. The city was platted in 1901 and incorporated in 1920. Today, Henriette is the home to 71 persons.
In 1910, Swedish immigrant Joseph Olson opened Olson’s Sawmill, a mill that continued operation until 1970 under the direction of his two sons, Leonard & Maynard. A portable mill with a steam engine travelled to area communities every spring to saw logs for farmers until the roads improved to allow log transportation to the mill. On one memorable day in the early 1920s, the crew sawed 300,000 board feet of lumber near Isanti. The steam engine was sold for scrap during WWII to aid in the war effort and the mill converted to a diesel engine.
This series of waymarks is tuned to getting people to visit these wonderful small communities before they disappear completely. To validate your ‘find’, please post a photo of you with your GPS at the coordinates and please relate a little tidbit about what you learned about the town and its people that is not in this narrative or the book.
