The co-ordinates are given for a
position about 20m to the south of the bridge on a footpath (see
photo).
This bridge crosses two roads, Gill
Street and Grenande Street with clearance of 15ft 03in for vehicular traffic
passing beneath the tracks. At one time these bridges used to be arch bridges
but they had the problem that high vehicles, passing through the bridge, needed
to take to the centre of the road to ensure they had maximum clearance. In the
main photo, arches can be seen to the left of the bridge that are for support
and not for vehicles to pass under. These arches are offered closed at each end
and then rented out to industrial type business where cleanliness and noise are
not a major distraction.
There is always the possibility of the
bridge taking a hit from a road vehicle so there are notices advising what to
do. The notice for the Gill Street bridge reads:
"This bridge is WERB
0130
Gill Street,
between Limehouse and Westferry
In the event of any
vehicle striking this
bridge please phone
Docklands Light
Railway
on 0207 538 3440
as quickly as

may be affected."
