Montgomery, the state capital of Alabama, is served by three main carriers: Delta Connection, US Airways Express, and American Eagle. The inside of the terminal is modern, reflecting the renovations completed in 2006. There is an outline map of Alabama in the floor and displays of various kinds, particularly on the second floor level where passengers enter the boarding areas and one finds the food and other services.

The following is from the airport web page:

"The Montgomery Regional Airport is located six short miles southwest of the capital city of Montgomery. The airport covers 2,000 acres and serves 16 counties in Central Alabama. Approximately 400,000 travelers fly in and out of Montgomery Regional Airport each year, with more than a million people coming through the airport terminal. The airport is responsible for more than $1.32 billion in annual economic activity.

In 2006, the Montgomery Regional Airport completed a multi-year terminal upgrade project which included expanding the terminal building and adding new gates and facilities. Further upgrades included escalators and an elevator to the second floor rotunda and boarding area; new jetbridges; new flight information displays; and conveniences such as new restrooms, concessions and free WiFi service throughout the terminal. A new Customer Service Center has also been added to make our passengers' traveling experience more enjoyable.

The History of the Montgomery Regional Airport

Montgomery's first commercial air services took place at Maxwell Field, a military field founded by the Wright Brothers in west Montgomery in 1910. The original municipal airport was opened in east Montgomery in 1929 to meet the city's growing demand for commercial aviation services. Gunter Field, as it came to be known, was served by a predecessor of American Airlines, and later by Eastern Air Lines, before being chosen in 1940 as the site of a new military pilot training facility.

Congestion at Gunter Field led the city to purchase land on U.S. 80 to serve as a new commercial site. The city entered into an agreement with the USAAF for this same site to serve as an auxiliary field for Gunter. Dannelly Field, so named for Navy pilot Clarence Moore Dannelly, Jr., Montgomery's first World War II casualty, opened in 1943. The city of Montgomery took title to Dannelly field, now known as Montgomery Regional Airport, in 1946 when air service began. In 1972, The Alabama Legislature passed legislation to create the Montgomery Airport Authority as a self – sustaining new public corporation governed by a nine member board appointed by each member of the Montgomery City Council. The daily operations and staff of the Montgomery Airport Authority are managed by the Executive Director and Deputy Director." source: (visit link)
