Wat Hau Kuang is located near the city centre of the capital of the Nan province of northern Thailand. It is one of the older temples in the city, and possibly dates to the foundation of the city. According to an historical plaque (in gallery) the earliest date for the temple is AD 1525. It has however, been renovated several times since then. In appearance now the temple and temple grounds looks to be entirely new.

Of note is an ancient chedi immediately behind the temple hall. Formerly exposed to the elements it is now enclosed in a decorative, protective housing.

The Wat functions as a Buddhist temple in the city, with regular visitors and worshippers. Interestingly, the temple has a single hall, which functions for both monks and lay worshippers, as opposed to the more customary two halls.
