Wat Phra That Chaewang is the premier Buddhist temple in Nan province. Located on the eastern outskirts of the provincial capital, Nan. According to a information sign at the temple (in gallery) the Wat was originally constructed in the year AD 1354 by the King of Nan, Kan Muang. The temple was then moved when the King moved the city to its current location, possibly in 1368.
The Wat covers a large area of ground, and is a popular destination for the city inhabitants. The centrepiece of the Wat is a 55m high golden Chedi. This contains sacred Buddhist relics given to the city by the Sukhothai Kingdom, possibly at the time of the foundation of the temple. There are also other ancient buildings and artefacts in the grounds, plus the usual range of wat facilities. Waymark made at entranceway.
