In North Attleborough, along Commonwealth Avenue, is the Fire Barn, a wooden building that was once a fire station for the town.
The building is located about a half mile west of the I-95 exit for Robert Toner Blvd and is on the north side of the road, at a gentle curve, where Elm Street meets Commonwealth Avenue.
The building is a wooden structure that is a squarish structure with a peaked roof and a bell tower. There are two garage doors that have a pointed apex. The main entrance is through the bell tower portion to the left of the doors. It is painted a gray-blue with white trim. The NRHP Plaque is located near the main entrance. On the right side is a covered staircase.
The North Attleborough Historical Commission web site has a page on the building. It was built in 1893 and used as a fire station (No. 2) from then to 1973, when it was replaced by a new station. Currently, it is a museum and is open for school groups during the weekdays, and for the public on Saturdays from 9 to noon (just missed it, myself). It is run by a non-profit society specifically set up to preserve this building.
