This bridge carries the main railway line northwards. Still in use, carrying the West Coast Main Line.

The railway only came as far as Lancaster, until in 1844 a route was agreed in Parliament to go over Shap, where the first sod was cut. The line opened in two sections. Between Lancaster and Oxenholme was first of which this bridge was part. Between Oxenholme and Carlisle opened in December 1846.
As with all old bridges, they were not designed for modern high vehicles. Barely enough clearance for farm traffic.
