In sea transport, a packet service is a regular, scheduled service, carrying freight and passengers. Newcastle is a city on the coast to the North of Scarborough that used to have a busy port, although these days it has declined in importance.

The current building was built in its present form in two phases; the majority in 1898-9, with additions in c. 1920 with a mock Tudor style. However some parts of the building date back to the 16th Century.

The first time any part of the building was used as a pub was in 1830.

The building is an English Heritage Grade II listed building. (visit link)
