This cairn outside of the offices of the Geological Survey of Canada (Calgary)commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Geological Survey and the 25th anniversary of the Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology, in 1992. It shows off a large variety of rocks, minerals, and fossils from Western and Northern Canada collected over the last 25 years by the Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology. Identification of the samples is left as an exercise for the observer; there aren't any signs that name the individual specimens.

The top plaque on the cairn reads:

"This cairn commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Institute for Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology, and the 150th anniversary of the Geological Survey of Canada - September 3, 1992"

"Ce cairn commémore le 25? anniversaire de l'Institut de Géologie Sédimentaire et Pétrolière et le 150? anniversaire de la Commission Géologique du Canada - Le 3 September 1992"

The lower plaque on the cairn reads:

"These rock, fossil, and mineral samples from Western and Northern Canada were collected by the staff of the Institute for Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology over the last 25 years (1967-1992)"

Ces roches, ces fossiles et ces échantillons minéreaux de l'ouest et du nord du Canada ont été récueillis par le personnel de l'Institut de Géologie Sédimentaire et Pétrolière au cours de les derniers 25 ans (1967-1992)"

As far as I can tell, the Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology has closed, although the Geological Survey of Canada continues to operate out of this building.
