That being said, this overlook is a rocky outcrop on the side of a ridge, about 10-15 feet square and 30 feet above the ground. From the top, you have a panorama view of the canyon spread before you and Apple River winding far below. It's well worth it if you are capable of climbing the rock. Even if you stay on the ground, the tower itself is an impressive sight.

Apple River Canyon State Park. See the IDNR webpage (linked) for regulations, driving directions, and a description of the area. Park at the lot at these coordinates:

To the west of the lot is a picnic area with benches, picnic tables, and water. The trailhead marker is behind the building to the Southwest. The trail is challenging (some moderate hills and a steep descent at the end) but relatively short (1 mile). Follow the small black hiking icon to stay on the correct trail.
After the final descent you will see Tower Rock. If you are not going to climb it, a picture at the base will suffice.
DO NOT attempt the climb if you are not confident of your ability, if it is dark, or if the rock is wet - you can log this waymark safely at the bottom. The best route up is a reverse "Z" - start at the lower right and make your way up to the tree at the upper left. An experienced adult or teenager should have little difficulty, and children as young as ten have made it. Remember that coming down is more difficult than going up, and heights can change the way a person acts. I strongly recommend having a partner or group. Don't forget your camera - once at the top you won't want to go back and get it!
