Bei den Heunensäulen (auch "Hünensäule") handelt es sich um Rundstützen aus Sandstein aus einem Steinbruch der Bullauer Berge bei Miltenberg in Unterfranken, die vor 1000 Jahren für den Mainzer Dom angefertigt wurden. Der Bauherr des Mainzer Doms hat sich jedoch wohl für andere Stützen entschieden, so daß sie nie benötigt wurden.
Zum 1000-jährigen Dombaujubiläum 1975 wurde eine der Heunesäulen der Stadt Mainz geschenkt. Die Mainzer Heunesäule wiegt 16 Tonnen, ist 6,40 Meter hoch und hat einen Durchmesser von 1,20 Meter. Sie wurde in der Mitte des Marktplatzes aufgestellt und ist mit einem Bronzesockel des Pfälzer Bildhauers Gernot Rumpf eingefasst.
The Heunensäulen (also called "Hünensäule" = "giants pillar") are circular columns of sandstone from a quarry in the Bullauer Berge near Miltenberg in Lower Franconia that were made 1000 years ago for the Mainz Cathedral. The builder of the Mainz cathedral, however, has choosen other columns, so that they were never needed.
For 1000 years jubilee of the cathedral construction in 1975, one of the Heunesäulen was given to the city of Mainz. The Mainz Heunesäule weighs 16 tons, is 6.40 meters high and has a diameter of 1.20 meters. It was set up in the middle of the market-square and is framed with a bronze base by the Palatinate sculptor Gernot Rumpf.
