The Whidden-Ward house was built in the 1720s and was originally located at 117 Deer Street, near the northeast corner of Deer and Vaughan Streets. It was moved around 1970 to High Street at 411 The Hill to preserve it and make way for an urban renewal project. The house was built by Michael Whidden, Jr. from a family of joiners with three generations building houses in and around Portsmouth from about 1718 to the early 1800s. After Michael Whidden, Jr.'s death in 1773, Nahum Ward purchased the home from his estate. Over the next decade he did extensive work on the house. In 1783 he sold the house to James Hill and it remained in the Hill family until 1863. The house then had several owners. Now that the house has been moved it serves as professional offices.
