Custer Peak is south of Deadwood, SD off route 385. It is only a 5 mile drive from the paved road. You won't need a 4X4 but I would suggest at least a Subaru, SUV, crossover, etc. There is a fire lookout tower on the peak. The summit is 6795ft. The lookout is locked. Along with the lookout you will find stables for the horses used to man the lookout tower, an outhouse, and an old well. The views are amazing. Bring a hat and jacket. The wind can get very strong and cool up there.
