North and South Menan Buttes and four smaller cones are aligned in a north-northwest direction. The buttes rise about 800 feet above the surrounding Snake River Plain and are about 10,000 years old. The buttes are the result of basaltic magma coming in contact with abundant groundwater. Particles of basaltic glass were formed as the water explosively turned to steam and fragmented the hot magma. The resulting tuff cones are made up of layered deposits of lapilli-size particles of glass and lithic rock fragments. More information at (visit link)
North Menan Butte is managed by the B.L.M. and 2865 acres were designated as a U.S. National Natural Landmark in 1980. (visit link)
