DCI Barnaby has had suspicions about the Mayor of Causton, Dave Hicks, for some time. He decides to investigate a land deal Causton is about to have with Brighton. A civic visit to Brighton is planned, and DCI Barnaby goes along. Whilst at Brighton, one of the party, Hugh Dalgleish, is found decapitated in a fun fair horror ride.

Upon investigation it is found that the local vicar has had four threatening letters delivered at night by a figure in monks robes. The threatened people are Hugh Dalgleish, the vicar, Lady Matilde William, and a local hotelier Jenny Russell. At first sight the murder appears to be connected to the land deal, but it later appears to be connected to the William (Guillaume) family.

The William family is headed by Lady Matilda William. She has only one son, Richard, who is confined to a wheelchair after an attack some years ago in Brighton. The William family will die out after Matilda and Richard’s death. Richard is cared for by Marcia Macintyre. The murder weapon is a sword removed from a medieval tomb chest.

Jenny Russell is found decapitated in her hotel. This sets Barnaby thinking about the connections between the people in the threatening letters. He sees a photo of Richard William and the vicar at Cambridge and deduces that they were gay lovers and that the attck in Brighton was actually a lovers tiff that went wrong. A further connection is made that Marcia Macintyre was also up at Cambridge at the same time. Eventually the connections are resolved. Dalgleish had put a proposal to Lady Matilda that the William line could be preserved if Jenny Russell had a child by Richard. Marcia overheard the proposal, which she was disgusted by, and decided to wreak revenge. Barnaby eventually catches up with Marcia, but not before she skewers the vicar in the vestry.

Jenny Russell’s hotel is located at the top end of the High St in Hemel Hempstead. The astute amongst you will recognise the restaurant from Pie in The Sky a few doors down.
