This is the premier Wat of the northern Thai province and city of Chiang Rai. This prominence is partly due to its being an earlier home to the fabled Emerald Buddha, a sacred Buddhist relic, now resident in the Grand Palace, Bangkok. The Wat is also noted as its abbot, the Venerable Phra Dhammarachanuwat, is the ecclesiastical head of all northern Thailand.
The extensive grounds of the temple are well designed and maintained, creating a restful and harmonious environment. The temple buildings seem half submerged by the trees and plants in the grounds. In addition to the normal range of buildings the Wat houses a historical museum and a Buddhist research centre. This Wat is on the Chiang Rai tourist circuit.
