The LaVale Toll house was constructed in 1833. It's the only remaining toll house in Maryland. The odd shape enabled the toll collector to see in all directions and watch for "pikers" who tried to avoid paying the tolls.
The building has a five sided two story section in front and a one story extension in back. Although it's described everywhere as seven sided it really has eight sides if you count the rear wall with the chimney.
