Marker Name: Mariapolis 1891 - 1991

Languages: English

Location:
St Paul Street and Norquay Avenue Mariapolis

Marker Text:
Mariapolis 1891 - 1991 Dedicated to the memory of those who homesteaded Mariapolis and district. Their toil and commitment to this land resulted in the organization of the unincorporated village district of Mariapolis on March 11, 1891. Originally, the town was to be Saint Marie, however the Northern Pacific and Manitoba Railways who established the line in 1890 indicated a preference for an alternate name which would not use the "Saint" designation. Father Telesphore Campeau, the parish priest at Saint Alphonse proposed Marieapolis and over the years the spelling was adopted as Mariapolis. The pioneers' great spirit and vision has been handed down over for the community and people of Mariapolis.
