The Princhester Base Hut (or Lower Princhester Hut)is a 6 bunk hut sited on the edge of private land in the Takitimu Mountain Ranges. This hut is very accessible in so far as vehicle access is possible right to the hut. From the Mossburn - TeAnau Highway (S45 32.723 E167 56.114) turn south onto Princhester Road driving through private property with public easement. Be sure to leave gates etc as you found them. My only issue with this hut is that it is very shaded and can therefore be very cold. It has an open fire in which more heat can be obtained by going outside and leaning against the chimney. Water can be gotten from the nearby Princhester Creek. Hut is frequently used by Hunters but can also be a base for starting the hike over to the Waterloo and Aparima Valleys. Some more information can be gotten here; http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/backcountry-huts-by-region/southland/southland/lower-princhester-hut/ . .
