This benchmark is located on the edge of the Lava Butte lava flow south of Deschutes River Woods, near where the railroad starts across the flow. To reach the location park at the end of Osage Road in Deschutes River Woods and follow the old road (now a trail) south for nearly two miles to the point where the trail starts up across the lava flows. The cap is located about 30 feet south of the trail and is cemented into a flat bedrock surface. The cap was set by the Bureau of Reclamation. The trail across the lava flow was built in 1907 to access a proposed power site at Benham Falls. The benchmark was probably placed in the 1920’s when there were a series of studies for a reservoir near Benham Falls.
