This is a real aircraft although it does not carry a real RAAF/Army serial number. It is actually an ex-US Army TH-1F previously operated as VH-LIQ (USAF serial: 66-1237).
It suffered a total power loss on 8/12/2009 and was severely damaged. It was bought up to static display standard at Caloundra airport and then moved to Nyngan NSW "in a helicopter swap" to replace A2-1022 on display there. A2-1022 was originally gifted to the people of Nyngan by the Australian Government to commemorate the evacuation of 2000 people from the town due to rising flood waters during the tragic 1990 Flood.
A2-1022 played an instrumental part in the most significant Australian action of the Vietnam War, the Battle of Long Tan. The original A2-1022 is now on static display at Caloundra RSL after it was swapped with this replacement aircraft.
Plaque at the site reads:
"THIS IROQUOIS HELICOPTER presented to the people of Nyngan by the Federal Government to commemorate the evacuation of Nyngan on 24th April 1990 WAS UNVEILED BY HIS EXCELLENCY REAR ADMIRAL PETER SINCLAIR A.O. Governor of New South Wales on the 4th April 1992"
At the time of the photograph we were passing through Nyngan on the way to Bourke and took the opportunity for a photo at night.
