Chiang Rai and Phayao are two of the many northern border provinces of the Kingdom of Thailand. A land of long winding roads, green hills, sharp valleys, rice farms, small towns, a smattering or three of tourists, and modernity via light industry.

At the border point, stretched across the highway linking the two provincial capitals is the standard blue welcome sign. This sign has three prominent provincial tourist sites emblazoned upon itself. There is no corresponding sign facing into Phayao Province. Understandable, Chiang Rai is one of the larger and more important provinces, while Phayao is not.

No welcome facilities, no change in the scenery, only one reason to stop.
