The plaque, on which the inscription is carved,
is fitted to the wall of the church between two enormous pairs of entrance
doors. The church was bombed in 1941, during the second World War, with the
priest being killed in this porch area. He was performing firewatching duties at
the time. In 1987 the church was just about completely gutted by fire and
considerable reconstruction and re-building took place. With that in mind, it is
unknown as to whether this is the original memorial or a replacement following
the two events mentioned.
The inscription, along the top edge of the
plaque, reads:
"To the Glory of God and in
Loyal Memory of those
from this Parish who Died in the War 1914 - 1918"
There then follows the 107 names
of the fallen.
At the bottom edge of the plaque
is inscribed:
"We ought to lay down our
lives for the brethren"
The quote is taken from the Holy
Bible - 1 John 3:16. The sentence in the King James 2000 Bible reads, if full:
"By
this perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we
ought to lay down our lives for the brethren."
