A nautical flagpole stands in the center of the observation deck at the
Leonardtown Wharf Public Park in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The flagpole is also the center of an inlaid compass rose. There is no gaff. The American flag flies from the top of the single mast. The Maryland state flag and the Leonardtown muncipal flag fly from the yardarm.
The Leonardtown Wharf is on the Breton Bay, an estuary of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Leonardtown was a busy port town and popular steamboat landing in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Recently the waterfront has been refurbished and made into a public park with a promenade along the water's edge with a bulkhead where boats can tie up, a boardwalk through wetlands, a canoe/kayak landing, picnic areas and a visitors pavilion.
