"Der Wiener Zentralfriedhof wurde 1874 eröffnet und zählt mit einer Fläche von fast 2,5 km² und rund drei Millionen Bestatteten zu den größten Friedhofsanlagen Europas. Er gehört aufgrund seiner vielen Ehrengräber, der Jugendstil-Bauwerke und des weitläufigen Areals zu den besonderen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt Wien.
Auf dem Friedhofsgelände befinden sich zahlreiche Gedenkstätten und Kriegsgräber bzw. Soldatenfriedhöfe. Die größten derartigen Gräberanlagen sind:
Friedhof für die Kriegsopfer des Ersten Weltkrieges, an dessen Vorderseite sich das 1925 von Anton Hanak gestaltete, monumentale Kriegerdenkmal Schmerzensmutter befindet
Friedhof für die Kriegsopfer des Zweiten Weltkrieges
Mahnmal für die Opfer des Faschismus 1934–1945 (Gruppe 41; Enthüllung am 1. November 1948)
Russischer Heldenfriedhof mit den sowjetischen Kriegsgräbern des Zweiten Weltkrieges, in denen 2624 gefallene Soldaten der Roten Armee (darunter zwölf Helden der Sowjetunion) beerdigt sind.
Jüdisches Heldendenkmal und Gräber gefallener jüdischer Soldaten des Ersten Weltkriegs aus Wien.
