Steed is put under house arrest at Mother’s after secrets disappear from the Caradoc Research Institute, where Steed has spent some time recently. With Steed out of action Tara is despatched to investigate, along with a clueless assistant, Watney.
Tara investigates an author who lives in a lighthouse near the Research Institute. Tara gets a frosty reception when she calls at the lighthouse. Her visit causes an attempt on Tara’s life, where she falls off a cliff, but fortunately survives. She creeps back into the lighthouse to find that the real author has been imprisoned, whilst a false author uses the lighthouse to direct light from a special telescope. The telescope is able to send and receive sound on anything that the telescope is focussed on. The telescope had been trained on Caradoc thus extracting the secrets.
At the end of the episode Tara startles Steed by speaking to him via the telescope. Steed nearly looses control of the car. The road Steed is driving on is actually Beacon Rd, Ivinghoe, whilst the telescope is actually on Beachy Head. Some feat!
Whilst the telescope is pure Avengers science fiction, devices using two ultrasonic beams have been used in real life to project focussed sound over several hundred meters.
