The time capsule, and building date were retrieved from the rubble of the demolished Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School in 1993. The monument itself is made from bricks from BCI.
The school was the only public high school in Belleville from 1928 until 1953.
As the city grew and changed, so did the school's demographics. In the end, rising maintenance costs and declining enrolment spelled the end.
The school was closed in 1992, and demolished soon after.
