This episode starts with Jean and Lionel climbing breathlessly up a hillside. The object of this climb is a picnic at the top organised by Rocky and Madge. Rocky and Madge cheated by getting a lift up the hill on Mrs Bale’s motorcycle combination. Rocky tells Jean and Lionel to treat Mrs Bale with some caution, as she has been acting strange lately. Mrs Bale arrives with the picnic and declares herself “not a spent force.”
When the party return home from the picnic Mrs Bale is still asserting that she can mange thank you. It is suggested that Rocky might have upset Mrs Bale, but Rocky denies that. Madge suggests it might be a man, but then rules that out as well. Lol arrives and Jean quizzes Lol about Mrs Bale, but he doesn’t know either.
Later Lionel starts to feel unwell and Mrs Bale tries to treat him with goose fat and brown paper. A Doctor is called and he doesn’t seem to know what is wrong with Lionel. It does however solve the problem with Mrs Bale. Apparently the Doctor had told Mrs Bale to slow down “at her age”. He had made a similar comment to Lionel.
The location for the picnic is at the top of a tumulus below the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon. Beacon Road and it’s junction with Tring Road can be seen behind Jean.
