William I, Prince of Orange-Nassau is the founder of Dutch independence and fell - as the inscription on the pedestal of the statue says - for his Protestant faith. The Dutch still remember him being mentioned in their national anthem. On 15 July 1584 he was shot dead on the stairs to city hall in Delft, Holland. On 15 May 1908 the statue of William of Orange was inaugurated in front of the Protestant Marktkirche (Market Church). It is a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II
