Ttangkkeut, which is the name give this region, can be translated as "Land's End" or "End of the Earth." This is a smaller peninsula on the southern tip of the larger Korean peninsula that has been determined to be the most southern point. There are many islands farther south that are part of Korea, but this is the most southern point on the mainland itself.
The sign is located in a park at the harbor of a small village, now made larger by tourism. The actually southern tip can be accessed by foot trail, where one may find a geocache. There is also an impressive observation tower on the top of the hill overlooking the tip and the islands beyond.
