The Buddhist temple (numerous different English spellings abound) of Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham is the largest and most richly decorated wat in the tourist town of Luang Prabang. It is located near the city museum, and is known for its intricately carved black lacquer and gold leaf artwork that depict the penultimate reincarnation of Buddha. The temple was built at the turn of the 18th century and has been continually restored and extended. An historic emerald Buddha statue sits inside the temple.
The temple, for the modest fee of 10,000 Kip ($1), is open to visitors. The grounds are well maintained and spacious. Waymark made at main entrance.
