Die Bronzeplastik eines nackten Jünglings nach antikem Vorbild verkörpert als Genius den Dichtergeist des jungen Goethe. Der Dichter selbst ist in einem Portraitmedaillon dargestellt, gerahmt von zwei Darmstädter Freunden: Johann Heinrich Merck sowie der von Goethe sehr geschätzten Karoline Flachsland, der Frau Johann Gottfried Herders.
Am 30. Juni 1903 wurde das Goethe-Denkmal in Anwesenheit des Großherzogs Ernst Ludwig enthüllt, der das entsprechende
Gelände im Herrngarten, Darmstadts ältesten Park, zur Verfügung gestellt hatte. Der Entwurf stammt von Baumeister Adolf Zeller, die bildhauerischen Arbeiten übernahm der Darmstädter Künstler Ludwig Habich.
The bronze sculpture of a naked young man inspired by the antique genius of the poet as embodying the spirit of the young Goethe. The poet himself is shown in a portrait medallion, flanked by two friends from Darmstadt: Johann Heinrich Merck and the by Goethe highly valued Karoline Flachsland, the wife of Johann Gottfried Herder.
On June 30, 1903, the Goethe monument was unveiled in the presence of the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, who made the corresponding site in Darmstadts oldest park, the Herrngarten, available. It was designed by architect Adolf Zeller, the sculptural work was undertaken by the Darmstadt artist Ludwig Habich.
