At the start of this episode Sandy has broken up with Nick, her boyfriend, and Jean, Judith and Alistair decide to take Sandy out for a meal. Lionel thinks it is a bad idea and is chided as being grumpy. Lionel is saved by the arrival of Rocky, Lionel’s father, who brightens everyone up and decides to take everyone out for some dancing followed by a burger. Rocky takes the opportunity to ask Lionel to give the bride, Madge, away.
At first Lionel isn’t keen on Rocky’s marriage, given he is 85 and Madge is 78, however, that opinion changes later on. The big day doesn’t get off to a good start as the best man is injured and Lionel becomes the replacement best man. Alistair steps in to give the bride away and Jean and Mrs Bale are bridesmaids.
Just before Lionel is due to give his speech at the reception, he gets a phone call from Rocky’s doctor telling him that Rocky has only a year to live. Lionel realises that Rocky’s marriage to Madge makes sense, given Rocky’s health, and gives a very uplifting speech at the reception.
On the way home from the wedding they pass through a village and notice that there are placards on the trees lining the road saying SANDY, I’M SORRY, and I LOVE YOU. At the end of the line of trees is Nick with his motorbike. Sandy makes up with Nick and rides off. Lionel, having taken Rocky’s example to heart, takes the opportunity to suggest to Jean that they live together.
Rocky’s wedding takes place, in reality at St John the Baptist Church, Aldenham. Rocky’s house is just behind the church, being in fact Glebe House, however there is no public access to Glebe House.
