This plaque to Battery C, 1st Illinois Light Artillery is located at Viniard Field on the west side of Lafayette Rd at the Chickamauga National Battlefield. It describes their actions during the battle.

This plaque is dedicated to the Battery "C", 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery and is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. Battery "C", 1st Illinois was organized at Ottawa, Illinois on October 31, 1861. It marks their location from Saturday, September 19, 1863 at 4 p.m. until Sunday, September 19, 1863 at 4:00 a.m. The commander of the battery was Captain Mark H. Prescott.

4 3” Rifles, 2 12 PDR. Howitzer
Bradley’s Brigade, Sheridan’s Division, McCook’s Corps.
September 19, 1863

Capt. Mark H. Prescott, Commanding
2d Lieut. Joseph R. Channel
2d Lieut. Stephen G. Grubb

   This battery with its Brigade moved from Pond Spring early in the
morning, forming temporary line of battle near Crawfish Spring, and,
subsequently, near Lee and Gordon’s Mill, without becoming seriously engaged.

   It reached this position about 4 P.M. The battery coming into position
on this ground, and remained till the morning of the 20th without serious
engagement or loss.
