Lionel is about to go on a lecture tour in Norwich and invites Jean for a day out in the country before he leaves. They go to Buckinghamshire to visit old haunts from their youth. The day does not go well, however. Having decided to dine at The Copper Kettle, they find that it is now a garage. As a second best they decide to go to Marlow Bottom for lunch, only to find that Lionel’s car is boxed in at a pub car park. After Lionel fails to get into the car, they decide to eat at the pub, but it is crowded, noisy, and the food leaves a lot to be desired.
A walk in the country ends in a field of thistles and Lionel falls in a ditch trying to find a way back to the road. On the positive side the path exits to a road just outside a hotel where Lionel and Jean take tea. It soon becomes apparent that they used to come to this hotel in the old days, and it hasn’t changed a bit. Lionel and Jean first made love at this hotel, which they both remember fondly. Lionel suggests they stay the night but the magic evaporates.
