Mark is engaged to Sophie, but is starting to think about breaking off the engagement. It is Sophie’s birthday and Mark, his flatmate Jez, and Sophie are going to Sophie’s parents. It is important for Mark to make a good impression with Sophie’s parents, in order to give him time to consider his position.

The first meeting goes down well, but things start to slide after that. Mark and Jez go out shooting with Sophie’s dad and Mark manages to shoot a pheasant. Unfortunately for Mark he only wings the bird and has to ring its neck, except he manages to pull it’s head off. Later that night Mark ends up philosophising with Sophie’s dad in the local pub. Sophie’s dad tells Mark about the importance of love in marriage and asks Mark to his face if he loves his daughter. Mark blusters his way through the conversation. Whilst Mark is at the pub with Sophie’s dad, Jez gets seduced by Sophie’s mum.

The next day Mark, Jez and Sophie’s dad go out metal detecting. Thinking Sophie’s dad can’t hear them with his headphones on, Jez and Mark discuss the fact that Mark is wanting to break up with Sophie. Sophie’s dad does hear them, however, and confronts Mark. They all retreat to Sophie’s dad's barn and have a drinking session. Sophie’s dad tells Mark and Jez that his wife is being unfaithful and that he knows who it is, making Jez squirm. Sophie’s Dad thinks the culprit is a local man, Dan. After downing a bottle of scotch Sophie’s dad decides to wreak revenge on Dan and burns his barn down.

As a birthday surprise Sophie’s mum and dad have given Sophie Nan’s cottage as a present. This sets Mark thinking that there may be an advantage in staying engaged to Sophie. At Sophie’s birthday party Sophie’s dad, having had a few drinks, decides it is time for a truth game and challenges Mark to tell Sophie the engagement is off. Mark protests that it isn’t and blurts out that Sophie’s dad has torched Dan’s barn. This is sufficient to deflect the engagement debate and Mark and Jez manage to leave Sophie’s parents house intact.

The cottage given to Sophie, and wrapped in ribbon, is in fact Vine Cottage on New Road, Letchmore Heath.
