Not only does the Hockey Hall of Fame hold many historic memorabilia from Canada’s national sport (move over lacrosse) but it is itself housed in an historic building, a former Bank of Montreal branch. A visit to the venue will improve one’s knowledge of our iconic pastime and should indubitably include a study of the wonderful 1885 domed skylight. The stained glass dome is the artistry of the Robert McCausland Company which at one point had the astonishing accomplishment of producing over 50 per cent of the stained glass in Canada, well over thirty thousand windows. The McCausland studio designs can be found in churches and historic buildings in particular in Ontario and the West. Further magnificent examples are the famous window of Toronto’s Old City Hall at Bay and Queen Street West, St Mark’s Anglican in Niagara-on-the-Lake and Holy Trinity Anglican in Winnipeg. The Stained Glass of Robert McCausland Limited was designated of national significance in 1991 and then plaqued by the federal government in 2000.
