CS:

• Prehrada na potoku „Bílá Desná“ byla vystavena v letech 1912 – 1915 jako soucást protipovodnových opatrení.

• Jde o sypanou hráz o výšce 14 metru a délce 173 metru.
  Šírka hráze ciní 54 metru v pate a 5.2 metru v korune. Projektovaná kapacita prehrady byla 400 000 kubických metru vody.

• Na západní strane hráze byl zbudován bezpecnostní preliv s vodní kaskádou a na východní strane prehrade druhý preliv se štolou prevádející cást vody do prehradní nádrže Souš.
  Ve strední cásti hráze byla umístena šachta s výpustním potrubím. To bylo ovládané dvojicí šoupat ovládaných z regulacní veže a ze šoupátkové komory.

• Prubeh stavby byl zpomalen první svetovou válkou (vypukla v cervenci 1914). Težká hospodárská situace ve válecných letech si vynutila úsporné úpravy projektu. Presto byla prehradní hráz v zárí 1915 dokoncena. Stavba byla zkolaudována v listopadu téhož roku.

• V zárí roku 1916 se hráz v míste výpustní šachty protrhla. 

• Poškozená prehrada nebyla nikdy obnovena. Dnes mají ruiny prehrady statut kulturní památky.

• Na turistické známce (i na hlavní fotografii) mužete videt hlavní cást prehrady – vež a komoru, z nichž se ovládala výpustní šoupata prehrady. Vedle nich protéká obrí trhlinou v hrázi potok Bílá Desná.

• Pri návšteve místa si mužete prohlédnout zbytky hráze i další cásti prehrady. Provede vás po nich krátká naucná stezka. 

O havárii prehrady...

• 18.9.1916, tedy zhruba po roce provozu, došlo na prehrade k osudné havárii.

• V 15:30 zpozorovali drevorubci poblíž výpusti hráze malou trhlinu, jíž tryskala voda. Upozornili na to hrázného.
  Hrázný telefonicky informoval správce stavby. Bylo rozhodnuto zacít okamžite s vypouštením prehrady.
  Proud vody prolínající hrází však sílil a znemožnil úplné otevrení výpustních šoupat.

• Hrázný musel utéci. V 16:15 oznamuje do Desné, že došlo k protržení hráze. Jsou alarmováni hasici a rozbíhá se evakuace. Tou dobou už se zacíná propadat kamenná dlažba na návodní strane hráze.

• V 16:40 hráz definitivne kolabuje a koruna prehrady se rítí do hlubin. 260 000 kubíku vody se dere obrí trhlinou ven.

• Povodnová vlna unáší balvany a strhává stromy. Za pár chvil zaplavuje i první stavení – pilu a myslivnu. Rozmetané kusy dreva umocnují nicivou sílu nespoutaného živlu rítícího se na nedalekou Desnou. Zde voda znicí vše, co ji stojí v ceste.

• Zátopová vlna prechází do rícky Kamenice a z ní až do reky Jizery. Ješte v tricet kilometru vzdáleném Železném Brode zaplavuje zahrady a domy.

• Behem pul hodiny je po všem. Po zdivocelé vodní mase zustává šest desítek obetí, 33 zcela znicených a 69 vážne poškozených domu. 307 osob prichází o strechu nad hlavou a se zdevastovanými továrnami prichází o práci více než 1 000 obyvatel hor.

• Poslední známou obetí katastrofy se stává c.k. vrchní rada Karel Podhajský, který odpovídal za stavební dozor. Po zpráve o neštestí se zastrelil.

• Soudní spory i objasnování prícin katastrofy trvalo 17 let. Stavbyvedoucí byli nejdríve zprošteni obvinení, pak odsouzeni k podmíneným trestum, a nakonec opet osvobozeni.

• Za príciny havárie bylo oznacováno nedostatecné zhutnení hráze, rozdílná rychlost sedání zemního telesa a kamenné výpustní štol a geologická anomálie, která zaprícinila vnik podzemní vody pod hráz a její podemletí.

• V roce 1996 provedli geologové spolecnosti Geotechnika a.s. nový pruzkum protržené prehrady. Vetšinu uvádených prícin pri nem vyloucili. Skutecným duvodem neštestí bylo celkové sedání podloží pod prehradou a jeho propustnost. Tím došlo k nadmernému vzlínání vody z prehrady do jejího telesa. Prosakující voda vymílala okolí výpustní štoly a nakonec vedla k vnitrní erozi hráze. Prícinou protržení tak bylo neprizpusobení projektu geologickým podmínkám místa.

• A dam on the brook "Bila Desna" were built between 1912 - 1915 as a part of anti-flood protection.

• It is a rockfill dams with a height of 14 meters and a length of 173 meters.
  Width of the dam is 54 meters in base and 5.2 meters in crown. The projected capacity of a lake was 400 000 cubic meters of water.

• On the western side of the dam there is a safety spillway with a water cascade. On the east side there is a second spillway with a tunnel which transferred a part of the water to the next dam named Souš.
  In the central part of the dam there was placed a shaft with outfall pipe. This pipe was controlled by a pair of gigantical slide valves. This slide valves were operated from a control tower and a valve chamber.

• The construction works were delayed by World War I (began in July 1914). Difficult economic situation in the war years forced a money-saving adjustment of the project. Nevertheless, the dam was completed in September 1915. The dam was finally approved in November of this year.

• In September 1916, the dam was broken near the outfall shaft. Damaged dam was never reconstructed.
  Today the ruins of the dam have status of the Czech cultural heritage.

• On the tourist stamp (or on the main photo) you can see the main part of the ruptured dam – the control tower and the valve chamber. Besides them the brook Bílá Desná flows through the giant rift in the dam.

• When you visit this place you can also see other remants of the dam. A short nature trail guides you through them.

About dam disaster...

• September 18, 1916, after a year of operation, the dam had a fatal accident.

• At 15:30 woodcutters spoted water gushing from a small rift near the outfall of the dam. They alerted a dam keeper about it.
  The dam keeper informed a main manager of the dam by telephone. He decided to begin with the emptying of the dam immediately.
  The flow of water seeping through the dam permanently grew stronger. Therefore it was impossible to open the slide valves completely.

• The dam keeper had to run away. At 16:15 he telephoned to the city Desna and announced that the dam was broken. Firefighters were alarmed and evacuation of the valley began. At that time a paving on the upstream side of the dam had began to break down.

• At 16:40 the dam finally collapsed and the crown fell into the depths. 260 000 cubic meters of water shot out of the reservoir by a giant rift.

• Flood wave carried boulders and trees. In no time water destroyed first houses – a sawmill and a gamekeeper´s lodge. Scattered pieces of wood magnify the destructive power of unleashed element rushing to the valley. In town Desna raging water destroyed everything in its way.

• Flood wave flew into the Jizera river. Water flooded gardens and houses in the city Železný Brod which is thirty kilometers away from the ruptured dam.

• Within half an hour the drama was over. Water killed 61 people, 33 buildings were completely destroyed and other 69 buildings were seriously damaged. 307 people lost their homes more than 1,000 inhabitants of the Jizera mountains lost their jobs in devastated factories.

• Mr. Karel Podhajský, the imperial administrator who was responsible for construction supervision, was the last known victim of the dam. When he received a report about the accident he commited suicide.

• A litigation and a investigation of the disaster took 17 years. At first construction managers were acquitted, late they were sentenced to conditional sentences and finally they were acquitted once againg.

• During the investigation several possible causes of the disasters were indicated – a lack of compaction of the dam, a different subsidence of the rockfill dam and stone overfall shaft or a geological anomaly.

• In 1996 geologists of a company Geotechnika a.s. conducted a new survey of the ruptured dam. They discovered that a real reason of the disasters was a permeability of a bedrock below the dam. Water seeped from the lake to the dam through the bottom and eroded the body of the dam near the outfall tunnel. It eventually led to an internal erosion of the dam. So mismatch of the project and the geological conditions caused the accident.
